(6)Earth Song est une chanson de l'auteur-compositeur-interprète américain Michael Jackson. Elle apparaît sur le double album HIStory, édité en 1995. La chanson a fait l'objet d'un clip en 1996 et a été remixée l'année suivante pour figurer sur l'album Blood on the Dance Floor.
Earth Song est le 3e single tiré de l'album HIStory, elle s'est classée numéro 1 en Grande-Bretagne en 1995, et est devenue la chanson de Michael Jackson s'étant le mieux vendue dans ce pays.

Thèmes
La chanson, initialement intitulée What About Us, est écrite par Michael Jackson alors qu'il se trouve en Autriche, au cours d'une tournée[1]. Earth Song aborde le thème de la préservation de l'environnement, son texte évoque la guerre, la pollution, la déforestation et la cruauté envers les animaux[2]. Le chanteur essaie de faire passer un message écologiste, il estime que la chanson représente une opportunité de faire entendre aux gens la « voix de la planète » (« I think earth feels the pain, and she has wounds […] this is my chance to pretty much let people hear the voice of the planet. »)[1].
Le vidéo-clip
Tourné en Croatie, en Tanzanie, au Brésil, ainsi qu'à New York[3], le vidéo-clip de Earth Song illustre les thèmes de la chanson. Il est réalisé par Nicholas Brandt, et est nommé aux Grammy Awards dans la catégorie « Best Music Video, Short Form » en 1997[4].
Interprétation sur scène
Durant la tournée HIStory World Tour, des enfants rejoignent Michael Jackson sur scène lors du final de Earth Song[1]. La même mise en scène est utilisée lorsqu'il interprète ce morceau durant la cérémonie des Brit Awards 1996, ce qui donne lieu à un incident quand Jarvis Cocker, chanteur du groupe britannique Pulp, perturbe volontairement sa performance en montant sur scène[5].
Earth Song devait également être interprété lors de la tournée This Is It.
Succès commercial
Earth Song se classe en tête du hit-parade britannique en décembre 1995 et reste numéro 1 durant six semaines[6]. Vendue à plus d'un million d'exemplaires, Earth Song est la 6ème meilleure vente de single en Grande-Bretagne pour l'année 1995[7], et devient la chanson de Michael Jackson s'étant le mieux vendue dans ce pays[4]. À la fin du mois de juin 2009, après la mort du chanteur, elle fait partie des 13 chansons de Michael Jackson classées dans le Top 40 britannique[8].
Le titre se classe en tête des hit-parades en Espagne, durant 10 semaines, et en Suisse, durant 31 semaines. Il atteint également le Top 5 dans de nombreux pays européens : l'Autriche, la Belgique, la Finlande, la France, la Norvège, les Pays-Bays et la Suède[9].
La chanson n'est pas sortie en single aux États-Unis[1], elle atteint la 32ème place du classement Dance Music/Club Play, établi à partir d'un sondage national auprès des disc jockeys[10].
