Citrus ×tangelo est est une espèce hybride d'agrume. Ses parents sont Citrus ×paradisi, le pomélo ou pamplemousse (l'appellation diffère selon les régions : voir pamplemousse et pomélo), et Citrus reticulata, un mandarinier.

L'hybride et son fruit sont également appelés tangelo. On le trouve aussi sous le nom commercial d'Ugli.

Ugli

D'aspect plus ou moins difforme, le fruit a une taille comprise entre celle d'une orange et celle d'un pamplemousse. Son écorce, ridée et épaisse, se pèle facilement et est généralement jaune-orangé, parfois verte ou rouge. La pulpe juteuse ressemble à celle d'un pamplemousse, en plus sucrée et avec des saveurs d'orange. Il est parfois orné d'une excroissance au niveau du pédoncule. Il se consomme généralement nature, une fois épluché.

Il est originaire de la Jamaïque d'où il est exporté depuis 1930. La période de production va de décembre à avril. Cultivé en faible quantité, il fait partie des agrumes les plus chers.

Commercialisation

Outre les uglis, il existe plusieurs variétés :

  • Minneola : la seule commercialisée en France.
  • Orlando
  • Seminole

Le tangelo minneola est principalement cultivé en Israël et en Floride où on le récolte en janvier-février.
