Above The Law est un groupe de gangsta rap de Pomona en Californie, créé en 1989 par les membres Cold 187um, KMG the Illustrator, Go Mack and DJ Total K-Oss.

Leur premier enregistrement était sur Ruthless Records d'Eric « Eazy-E » Wright. Le label indépendant fondé par Eazy-E qui a mené N.W.A et beaucoup d'autres artistes qu'il a produit.

Utilisant des samples de funk des années 70 et de la soul avec des instrumentations live (Big Hutch à étudié le Jazz à l'école), le groupe est repéré par Eazy-E qui les signe sans hésiter sur son label Ruthless Records et en fait ses protégés et sort leur premier album en 1990, Livin' Like Hustlers, un album rempli de violence et de sexe comme tout album de Gangsta rap. On retrouve N.W.A. sur le morceau « Last Song ».

L'album est co-produit par Dr. Dre avant son départ de N.W.A La mixtape The Vocally Pimpin' EP sort en 1991 suivi de leur second album en 1993, Black Mafia Life. Sur cet album, sans doute leur meilleur, on retrouve des apparitions de Eazy-E, Kokane, MC Ren, Money B de Digital Underground et de 2Pac. Go Mack décide alors de quitter le groupe après cette sortie et Above The Law poursuit en trio pour leur dernier album chez Ruthless en 1994, Uncle Sam's Curse, sur lequel figurent de grandes performances de KMG et une présence impressionnante du chanteur Kokane. Après la disparition tragique de Eazy-E, Above The Law quitte Ruthless pour Tommy Boy Records chez qui ils sortent en 1996 Time Will Reveal. Bien que les paroles s'éloignent un peu de la tradition Gangsta, Cold 187um démontre toutes ses qualités de producteur à tendance G-Funk.

La sortie en 1998 de Legends maintient en vie la flamme West Coast mais sera leur dernière sortie chez Tommy Boy. Ils fondent ensuite leur propre label, West World Records, et signent un deal avec Street Solid Records pour sortir en 1999 Forever: Rich Thugs. La même année Big Hutch sort un album solo, Executive Decisions. En 2000, BigHutch est recruté par Suge Knight pour devenir le nouveau producteur et directeur musicale chez Death Row Records, le label devenant ainsi la nouvelle maison de Above The Law. Ils enregistre un album, Sex Money & Music, mais qui fut sans arrêt repoussé. Ils quittent alors Death Row en de bons termes (ce qui est rare avec ce label), mais Big Hutch a eu le temps de produire ou (re-produire) quelques morceaux de Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Tha Dogg Pound ou encore des morceaux pour le premier album de Crooked I (voir (en) Crooked I). Malgré tout, « Sex Money & Music » finit par sortir en 2007. Réalisé dans son intégralité en 2003.
