Bernard Freeman alias Bun B (né le 19 mars 1973) est un rappeur américain. Il fait partie du célèbre groupe UGK avec Pimp C. Il est aussi membre de Rap-A-Lot-Records et a fondé le label Trill Entertainment avec Pimp C.

Biographie

Ses premières apparitions importantes ont lieu aux côtés de Jay-Z sur le titre Big Pimpin, d'abord connu avec UGK. Puis, il se fait connaître en solo grâce à ses nombreuses apparitions sur des albums de rappeurs de Houston, ainsi que sur ceux d'autres artistes du sud des États-Unis. Parmi ses meilleures collaborations, on retient 3 Kings (feat. T.I.) de Slim Thug, They Don't Know (feat. Mike Jones) de Paul Wall), Gimmie That de Webbie et 23-Hr. Lockdown des Ying Yang Twins. Bien que la plupart de ses collaborations aient été relativement populaires, Bun a également travaillé avec des artistes du sud peu connus comme Little Brother et Trae.

Bun B et Pimp C forment UGK à la fin des années 1980 à Port Arthur au Texas. En 1988, ils sortent en indépendant leur premier album, The Southern Way, sur cassette. Puis ils signent avec Jive Records, et sortent ensuite une série d'albums couronnés de succès. Bun B forme son deuxième projet, Mdll Fngz, en 2000, mais le groupe UGK demeure sa principale occupation. Mddl Fngz a figuré dans le jeu vidéo AND 1 Streetball avec le titre Hard In the Paint. Il a été présenté dans Houston Mic Pass, une annonce parrainée par Yahoo! et Pepsi. Il est accompagné par Lil'Flip, Chamillionaire, Trae, Chingo Bling, Short Dawg, H.A.W.K, Magno et Mike-D. Le groupe est définitivement dissous à cause de la mort de Pimp C, le 4 décembre 2007.

En 2005, sort son premier album intitulé Trill et le 20 mai 2008 est sorti II Trill. Son troisième album Trill O.G est sorti le 3 août 2010 et est déjà considéré comme classique selon le magazine The Source.

Anecdotes

Par ailleurs, le deuxième et le troisième album de Bun B ont pour titres des jeux de mots :

  • L'album II Trill a deux sens : le premier veut dire "trop vrai", et le deuxième fais référence à Pimp C, son ex-acolyte en disant "2 vrais".
  • L'album Trill O.G a deux sens lui aussi : le premier veut dire "vrai gangster" (O.G étant l'acronyme de Original Gangster) et le deuxième sens étant Trilogy ou Trilogie en français, réference à son troisième album
  • Toujours dans son troisième album, Trill O.G, une chanson nommée Trillionaire en featuring avec T-Pain qui pourrait signifier "la révolution des vrais" et trillionaire dans le statut social.
