Giuseppe Ottolenghi est un général et homme politique italien né le 26 décembre 1838 à Sabbioneta (Lombardie) et mort le 2 novermbre 1904 à Turin.

Issu d'une famille juive de notables apparemment originaire d'Ettlingen (Ottolenghi en italien) en Allemagne[1], qui a donné plusieurs rabbins au judaïsme italien, Giuseppe Ottolenghi fait des études de droit avant d'entrer à l'académie militaire de Turin. Il s'engage dans la campagne de 1859, est promu et sert durant les campagnes de 1860 et 1861.

Il est le premier Juif à appartenir à l'état-major. En 1863, il est nommé capitaine en 1864 il combat les brigands du Basilicate, qui attaquent les proprétaires terriens de l'Italie du sud. Cela lui vaut la médaille d'argent de la valeur militaire.

Durant la campagne de 1866, il reçoit la croix de Savoie et d'autres décorations. Il est quelque temps professeur d'histoire militaire et de tactique à l'académie militaire de Modène. Puis il est attaché militaire auprès de l'armée française durant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870.

Il représente en 1878 l'Italie à la commission européenne chargée de fixer la frontière entre la Turquie et le Monténégro. Il est promu général de brigade en 1888, général de division en 1895, général de corps d'armée en 1902. Il contribue à la restructuration de l'armée italienne après la défaite d'Adoua.

Il est ministre de la guerre de 1902 à 1903 dans le cabinet Zanardelli. Il est fait sénateur en même temps qu'il est nommé ministre.
