Artur London

Artur London, né le 1er février 1915 à Ostrava et mort le 7 novembre 1986 à Paris, est une personnalité politique communiste tchèque.

Biographie

Issu d'une famille juive, il entre à 14 ans aux Jeunesses communistes, intègre les Brigades internationales en Espagne, et devient résistant en France dès 1940. Il est déporté à Mauthausen en 1942.

En 1949 il est nommé vice-ministre des Affaires étrangères de Tchécoslovaquie, mais est arrêté en 1951. Il est l'un des quatorze accusés du procès de Prague en 1952, à qui l'on arrache sous la torture des aveux de « conspiration contre l’État », qui se sont révélés par la suite fabriqués. Artur London échappe à la peine de mort, mais est condamné à la prison à perpétuité. Il est réhabilité en 1956.

En 1963, London quitte la Tchécoslovaquie et s'installe en France ; il y publie Espagne…, ouvrage consacré à la guerre civile, ce qui est pour lui une façon de réhabiliter les anciens des Brigades internationales emprisonnés ou exécutés lors des procès de Prague, Budapest et Sofia, et en 1968, il publie L'Aveu, adapté par Costa Gavras sous le même titre, en 1970.

Sa femme Lise London, née Lise Ricol, est la belle-sœur du dirigeant du PCF Raymond Guyot.
