Le kirtan (du sanskrit kîrtana, « répéter ») désigne les chants dévotionnels dans diverses traditions spirituelles de l'Inde et du Bangladesh, accompagnés à l'harmonium et au tablâ.
En tant qu'abréviation de shabad kirtan, il désigne la musique dévotionnelle et rituelle du sikhisme. Apparenté à la musique hindoustanie dont il emprunte certains râgas et certains instruments, le kirtan met en musique le shabad ou Verbe sacré, en général issu des écritures des Sikhs et plus particulièrement du Guru Granth Sahib.
Chez les Sikhs, sa pratique et son écoute sont avant tout une forme de méditation, le support d'un enseignement spirituel, celui des gurûs, et un moyen de communiquer avec le divin.
