Saint Aidan évêque de Ferns, (mort en 626/632. Premier évêque du lieu dont il était abbé et fondateur. On le fête le 31 janvier.


Irlandais né dans le Connacht, élevé dans le Leinster, il va recevoir sa formation monastique au Pays de Galles auprès de saint David de Ménevie. Puis il revient en Irlande. Il était apparenté à saint Dallan Forgaill. Lors de son retour en Irlande il devient premier évêque de Ferns (Wexford).

Connu aussi sous les noms de saint Madoc, Edan, Modoc, Maedoc, en gallois Aeddan, en latin Aidanus, Adanus.

On lui attribue de grandes austérités, dont un jeûne de pain d'orge et d'eau pendant sept ans, ainsi que la récitation quotidienne de 500 psaumes. Il avait beaucoup de tendresse pour les animaux et on dit de lui qu'il a rendu un grand cerf invisible pour lui permettre d’échapper à une meute de chiens.
