A. K. Erlang (1^er janvier 1878 - 3 février 1929) était un mathématicien danois ayant beaucoup travaillé sur la théorie des files d'attente, et la gestion des réseaux téléphoniques.

Erlang s'est attelé, sur la base notamment des travaux de Poisson dont la loi des événements rares a trouvé toute sa dimension appliquée aux réseaux de télécommunications, à l'élaboration d'un modèle mathématique pour le dimensionnement des réseaux télécoms sur une approche statistique afin de parvenir à des coûts d'exploitation de nature à permettre un marché de masse.
