Fable de Schleicher (Le mouton et les chevaux)

Présentation

La fable de Schleicher (Avis akvāsas ka) est un texte artificiel composé en proto-indo-européen (langue hypothétique et reconstituée) par Schleicher, en 1868. Scheicher fut le premier érudit à écrire un texte en proto-indo-européen. En 140 ans, maintes réécritures de la fable ont été proposées, reflétant l'évolution de la conception du proto-indo-européen.

En 1939, Helmut Arntz publia la première révision de la fable, écrite par Hermann Hirt. En 1969, Winfred Lehmann et Ladislav Zgusta proposèrent une nouvelle réécriture de la fable. En 1997, dans l'Encyclopédie de la culture indoeuropéenne^[1], apparut une nouvelle version signée Douglas Q. Adams. Les dernières réécritures en date sont celles de Kortlandt^[2] (2007) et de Lühr (2008).

The Sheep and the Horses

[On a hill,] a sheep that had no wool saw horses, one of them pulling a heavy wagon, one carrying a big load, and one carrying a man quickly. The sheep said to the horses: "My heart pains me, seeing a man driving horses". The horses said: "Listen, sheep, our hearts pain us when we see this: a man, the master, makes the wool of the sheep into a warm garment for himself. And the sheep has no wool". Having heard this, the sheep fled into the plain.

Le mouton et les chevaux

[Sur une colline,] un mouton qui n'avait pas de laine vit des chevaux, l'un tirant une lourde charrette, l'un soutenant une grosse charge, l'un conduisant un homme à toute allure. Le mouton dit aux chevaux : "Cela me fait mal au cœur de voir un homme conduire des chevaux". Les chevaux dirent : "Écoute, le mouton, cela nous fait mal au cœur de voir ceci : l'homme, le maître, se fabrique un chaud vêtement avec la laine du mouton. Et le mouton n'a pas de laine". Ayant entendu ceci, le mouton s'enfuit dans la plaine.

Commentaires

L'évolution de la fable, au fil des réécritures, témoigne des progrès de la linguistique sur le proto-indo-européen commun. On passe d'une langue très proche du sanskrit à une langue beaucoup plus complexe. Les dernières réécritures font apparaître la théorie des laryngales.
