Valentine Baker, dit Baker Pasha (1827—1887), est un officier militaire britannique, frère cadet de Sir Samuel Baker.

Biographie

Éduqué à Gloucester et sur l'île de Ceylan, il entra en 1848 dans les corps des fusiliers de Ceylan.

Il participa ensuite à une guerre contre les Xhosas en 1852 puis à la guerre de Crimée (notamment la bataille de la Tchernaïa et la chute de Sevastopol) sous la bannière du 12e régiment de lanciers.

Il arriva ensuite au commandement du 10e régiment de hussards, position qu'il garda durant près de 30 ans.

Il participa à une expédition dans le Khorasan, ne parvint à atteindre le Khanat de Khiva mais permit de récuperer des renseignements militaires et sur la géopolitique de la région, et notamment sur l'avancée des Russes en Asie Centrale. En 1874, il retourna en Angleterre à Aldershot et sa carrière militaire s'arrêta après une condamnation judiciaire.

Deux ans après, il entra au service de la Turquie en guerre contre les Russes, avant de rejoindre l'armée égyptienne.

Il se rendit au Soudan lorsque la guerre se déclencha en 1884 et fut défait par Osman Digna lors des batailles d'El Teb. Il resta au service des Égyptiens jusqu'à sa mort en 1887.

Œuvre littéraire

Il écrivit un certain ombre d'ouvrages militaires. Our National Defences (1860), War in Bulgaria, a Narrative of Personal Experience (1879), Clouds in the East (1876).
