Produit par la division cinématographique de Motown, le film donne la part belle à Michael Jackson et à Diana Ross. Le seul membre important de la distribution d'origine est Mabel King. La musique de Charlie Smalls est solidement épaulée par des compositions originales ou des arrangements de Quincy Jones, Nick Ashford et Valerie Simpson.
Le film a déçu les fans de la comédie musicale, notamment par sa distribution opportuniste qui évinçait des légendes de Broadway comme Hinton Battle. Son budget important (24 millions de dollars, presque deux fois plus que le budget de Star Wars, sorti l'année précédente) et ses recettes médiocres (13 millions de dollars) en ont fait un « flop », qui se revoit tout de même avec une pointe de nostalgie.
