Le français Auguste Mouchout, en 1860, s’intéressa le premier à l’énergie solaire. En concentrant des rayons de soleil, il produisit de la vapeur qui actionnait un petit moteur. Il fut professeur de mathématiques au lycée de Tours et défendit l'idée de trouver des solutions énergétiques alternatives au charbon. Celui-ci, alors principalement exploité en Angleterre motiva ses travaux et les anéantit car le gouvernement français, après avoir patiemment analysé les travaux de Mouchout se rangea à l'idée de nouer des liens diplomatiques plus forts avec l'Angleterre puis exploita son propre sous-sol.
