Charles Webster Leadbeater

Charles Webster Leadbeater (1847-1934), prêtre anglais et auteur théosophe, contribua à la pensée ésotérique théosophique au travers de nombreux ouvrages et affirmait être clairvoyant.

Biographie

Leadbeater était un prêtre anglican qui rejoignit la Société Théosophique en 1883. L'année suivante, il rencontra Helena Petrovna Blavatsky quand elle se rendit à Londres. A cette époque, il était le destinataire de quelques lettres des « Maîtres de Sagesse » qui l'incitèrent à se rendre en Inde. Une fois arrivé, il affirma avoir reçu des visites et un entraînement de la part de quelques uns des Maîtres de Mme Blavatsky. Ce fut le point de départ d'une longue carrière au sein de la Société Théosophique.

Il reste connu et influent pour ses travaux qu'il affirmait réalisés par clairvoyance tels que ses ouvrages Les Chakras et L'Homme, visible et invisible traitant de l'aura humaine et des chakras, ou bien en écrivant la fonction des Sacrements pour l'Église catholique libérale, parmi d'autres sujets qu'il a traités.

Son activité la plus illustre est la découverte de Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), sur la plage privée qui constituait une partie du centre international de la Théosophie à Adyar, en Inde. Krishnamurti et sa famille vivaient dans le centre international pendant quelques mois avant sa découverte. Il était, affirmait les Théosophes, le « véhicule pour la venue de l'Instructeur du Monde » que de nombreaux Théosophes attendaient. Ce nouvel instructeur, dans la lignée de Moïse, Bouddha, Zarathoustra, le Christ ou Mahomet, était supposé divulguer une nouvelle révélation, un nouvel enseignement religieux. Les Théosophes crurent que l'instructeur serait une entité spirituelle qui serait venu « adombrer » le corps de Jiddu Krishnamurti. Cependant Krisnamurti , en 1929 , déclara ne pas être le "Messie" attendu. Devant 30 000 théosophes il déclara la dissolution de "l'Ordre de l'Etoile d'Orient" qui devait promouvoir son action d'"envoyé" à l'échelle mondiale.

Charles Leadbeater resta en Inde pendant quelque temps en observant le développement de Krishnamurti, mais sentit qu'il était appelé pour aller en Australie pour le service. C'est une fois en Australie qu'il devint un membre déterminant de l'Église catholique libérale dont il fur le deuxième évêque-président.

À un moment de sa vie, Leadbeater fut accusé de pédérastie mais ne fut jamais l'objet d'une instruction judiciaire ou amené au tribunal, alors qu'il aurait existé un ensemble de faits qui suggèrent qu'il aurait abusé sexuellement certains de ses étudiants aux États-Unis, en Inde et en Australie. Peter Michel, dans la biographie qu'il a réalisée de Charles W. Leadbeater, écrit que ces accusations demeurent malgré tout suspectes dans la mesure où elles venaient de ceux qui pouvaient être considérés comme ses ennemis : Alexander Fullerton, Herbert Burrows, G.R.S. Mead, Hubert van Hook, Katherine Tingley et Hilda Martyn. Il a été dit, à l'époque, que Fullerton, par exemple, avait écrit une fausse lettre attribuée à Leadbeater et s'adressant à un jeune garçon en signant « Des milliers de baisers, mon chéri ».

Deux faits demeurent cependant incontestables, qui ont peut-être été mis en relation entre eux par ses détracteurs et ses ennemis de l'époque. Il est vrai qu'avant 1906, il recommanda la pratique de la masturbation comme prophylaxie dans certains cas à de jeunes garçons (plutôt que de les envoyer dans les maisons closes, comme c'était admis à l'époque). Mais il s'agissait d'idées (assez révolutionnaires pour l'époque et néanmoins reconnues aujourd'hui) que Charles Leadbeater avait déjà avant de rejoindre la Société Théosophique et alors qu'il était déjà un membre de l'Église.

La clairvoyance de Leadbeater n'était par ailleurs pas exempte de graves erreurs. Dans son ouvrage L'occultisme dans la nature (The Inner Life), il affirme par exemple qu'il y aurait une population d'humains sur la planète Mars.
