John Vincent Atanasoff (4 octobre 1903 – 15 juin 1995) était un physicien, mathématicien et ingénieur américain d'origine bulgare. Il a été, avec son étudiant Clifford Berry, le concepteur du premier ordinateur, nommé ABC pour Atanasoff-Berry Computer.

Ses idées, utilisation du binaire, utilisation d'une unité arithmétique et logique pour effectuer les calculs de base furent reprises dans l'ENIAC, considéré ainsi à tort comme le premier ordinateur. En effet, Eckert et Mauchly, concepteurs de l'ENIAC, brevètent leur invention comme le premier ordinateur ("first digital computer"), mais un procès dans les années 1970, juge qu'ils n'ont fait que reprendre les idées de l'ordinateur de Atanasoff-Berry, ABC, et consacre ainsi Atanasoff comme l'inventeur du premier ordinateur électronique. Le procès Honeywell v. Sperry Rand (1973) est entré dans l'histoire non seulement pour l'attribution de l'invention de l'ordinateur à Atanasoff, mais aussi pour l'invalidation du brevet d'Eckert et Mauchly, mettant cette invention dans le domaine public.

Atanasoff a fait sa thèse de doctorat en 1930, à l'Université du Wisconsin-Madison, portant sur La constante diélectrique de l'hélium. Ensuite, il rejoint l'Université d'Iowa, où il enseigne les mathématiques et la physique, et où il travaille sur l'ordinateur.
