John Anthony Gallagher, né le 29 janvier 1964 à Londres, est un ancien joueur de rugby à XV néo-zélandais qui a joué 41 fois avec les All-Blacks de 1986 à 1989. C’était un arrière ou trois quart centre, de 1,90 m et 85 kg.

Biographie

D'origine anglaise, Gallagher s'est établi en Nouvelle-Zélande, et après seulement trois saisons, il a fait ses débuts avec les Blacks en octobre 1986 à l'occasion d’un match contre une sélection française à Strasbourg. C’est le deuxième anglais, après Jamie Salmon, qui a fait partie des Blacks.

En 1986 il a remporté aussi le titre de champion des provinces avec Wellington (185 points marqués en saison).

Gallagher a remporté la coupe du monde 1987 (cinq matchs joués, dont la finale contre la France). Il a marqué quatre essais contre les Fidji, un record pour les Blacks.

Il a fait des tournées au Japon (1987), Australie (1988), Pays de Galles et Irlande (1989).

En 1988, il a marqué 13 essais en 18 matchs avec les Blacks.

En 1990, après avoir joué 88 matchs pour Wellington et 41 pour les Blacks, il partit soudainement pour l’Angleterre afin de jouer au Rugby à XIII. Comme d'autres joueurs à la même époque, il souhaitait faire une carrière professionnelle.
