John Couch Adams (5 juin 1819 - 21 janvier, 1892), était un mathématicien et astronome britannique. Adams est né à Laneast, dans les Cornouailles et décédé à Cambridge.

Sa plus célèbre découverte fut la prédiction de l'existence et de la position de la planète Neptune, en ne se basant que sur les mathématiques. Il effectua ses calculs pour expliquer les divergences entre l'orbite d'Uranus et les lois de Kepler et de Newton, qui lui valurent la Médaille Copley en 1848.

Au même moment, mais à l'insu l'un de l'autre, les mêmes calculs furent effectués par Urbain Le Verrier. Le Verrier demanda à Johann Gottfried Galle de localiser la planète, ce qui fut fait en septembre 1846. Malgré les réclamations britanniques, Le Verrier fut considéré comme le découvreur de la planète.

John Adams est aussi connu pour avoir inventé une méthode numérique d'intégration des équations différentielles ordinaires, qui porte son nom conjointement avec Forest Ray Moulton et Francis Bashforth, qui ont amélioré par la suite sa méthode.

Il devient membre de la Royal Society en 1849. Il remporta la médaille d'or de la Royal Astronomical Society en 1866.

En 1884, il assista à la Conférence Méridienne Internationale en tant que délégué du Royaume-Uni.
