Saint Alphège (954-1012), dit aussi Alfege ou Ælfheah, fut évêque de Winchester et archevêque de Cantorbéry.

Vie

Né à Weston dans le Somerset, dans une famille noble, il devint moine anachorète avant d'être élu abbé de l'Abbaye de Bath. Sa grande piété lui valut d'être nommé évêque, et de devenir archevêque par la suite. C'est ainsi qu'en 1006, il succéda à Aelfric comme archevêque de Cantorbéry.

Il favorisa le culte de saint Dunstan dont il fit écrire une biographie.

Capturé en 1011 par les Vikings, refusant qu'il soit versé une rançon pour sa libération, il fut assassiné en 1012 à Greenwich. On raconte que c'est lui que priait Thomas Becket quand il fut massacré.

Vénération

Saint Alphège fut canonisé en 1078 par le pape Grégoire VII, sa fête fixée au 19 avril. Son tombeau fut reconstruit par saint Anselme de Cantorbéry au début du XIIe siècle. Il est représenté en habits épiscopaux, portant une hache à la main, symbole de son martyre.

En 1929, une église fut construite à Bath, dédiée à Notre-Dame et saint Alphège. Une autre avait été érigée en 1220 à Solihull dans le comté de Midlands.
