La « ligue du lierre » tire son nom du lierre qui pousse sur les vieux édifices en briques des universités de Nouvelle-Angleterre ; ici la tour Quill & Dagger de l'université Cornell.

L’Ivy League est un groupe de huit universités privées du nord-est des États-Unis. Elles sont parmi les universités les plus anciennes du pays (sept ont été fondées par les Britanniques avant l'indépendance) et les plus prestigieuses du pays. Le terme « ivy league » a des connotations d'excellence universitaire, grande sélectivité des admissions ainsi que d'élitisme social.

Les universités de la Ivy League sont de plus considérées comme étant parmi les plus prestigieuses dans le monde et sont classées parmi les meilleures universités américaines et mondiales[1].

« Ivy » (« lierre » en anglais) fait référence aux lierres qui poussent sur les murs des bâtiments de ces universités, ce qui symbolise leur ancienneté.
