Indiana Hoosiers est un club omnisports universitaire de l'Université d'Indiana (Bloomington) (voir également Université d'Indiana). Les équipes des Hoosiers participent aux compétitions universitaires organisées par la National Collegiate Athletic Association. Indiana fait partie de la division Big Ten Conference depuis le 1er décembre 1899. L'ensemble du club qui gère 24 sports avait un budget de 42 millions de dollars pour la saison 2004-2005. A l'été 2006, les Hossiers ont remporté 157 titres de conférence Big 10.
L'équipe vedette de Purdue est celle de basket-ball masculin qui fut championne nationale en 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981 et 1987.
L'équipe de football américain débuta ses activités en 1884.
Origine du nom de l'équipe
Les habitants de l'Indiana sont surnommés « hoosier », mais l'origine de ce mot est inconnue ; au xviiie siècle, le mot était utilisé dans le Sud-Est des États-Unis dans le sens « cul-terreux » ou « péquenaud ».
