L'impaction est un colmatage des viscères par une quantité trop importante de cellulose non digérée.
Ainsi chez le bovin une ration trop cellulosique peut entraîner une sous-fermentation qui peut elle-même aboutir à de l'impaction. Lors d'impaction, le contenu du rumen est solidifié sur toute sa hauteur. Un son mat est donc audible sur toute la surface du rumen. De plus, le contenu étant solide, la palpation extérieure laissera l'empreinte du poing dans le rumen.
