Ieoh Ming Pei
Ieoh Ming Pei (贝聿銘, pinyin : Bèi Yùmíng) est un architecte d'origine chinoise et de nationalité américaine, né à Canton (Chine) le 26 avril 1917. Ses réalisations sont caractérisées par la recherche d'une certaine pureté des formes alliée à une efficacité fonctionnelle, inscrites dans le mouvement du style international et dans la lignée de Walter Gropius. Le recours aux formes abstraites et l'emploi de matériaux froids tels que la pierre, le béton, le verre et l'acier sont accompagnés d'une forte propension aux effets théâtraux et aux défis technologiques.
Ieoh Ming Pei est diplômé en 1940 du MIT pour la spécialité architecture. De 1945 à 1948, il enrichit sa formation par une maîtrise à Harvard sous la direction de Marcel Breuer et de Walter Gropius. De ce fait, il est généralement considéré avec Cesar Pelli, Kevin Roche et Paul Rudolf comme faisant partie de la seconde génération d'architectes modernes américains, successeurs et anciens élèves des maîtres européens.
En 1955, il est naturalisé américain et fonde sa propre agence avec deux associés, Eason Leonard et Henry Cobb, qui deviendra l'agence Pei Léonard Cobb & Partners.
