Le terme Pentateuque désigne cinq premiers livres de la Bible, aussi appelés "Les 5 Livres de Moïse", bien qu'ils aient probablement été rédigés ou compilés par Esdras (voir ici).

Le mot Pentateuque vient du grec ancien Πεντάτευχος (Pentateukhos) lequel signifie cinq livres. Il résulte de la combinaison de deux mots en grec ancien :

  • πέντε (pente) : cinq ;
  • τεῦχος (teûkhos) : Livres.

Livres du Pentateuque :

Ces cinq livres racontent l'histoire mythique du peuple d'Israël, depuis la création du Monde jusqu'à la mort de Moïse.

Ils constituent dans la religion juive la Torah (la Loi) car, outre les récits mythologiques, on y trouve tout un ensemble de prescriptions (religieuses, rituelles, culturelles, juridiques, etc...) qui constituent les bases du judaïsme, par exemple, les lois alimentaires, ou Cacherout, qui figurent dans le chapitre 11 du Lévitique.

Aux premiers temps du christianisme primitif, les lois alimentaires ont été abolies par Paul de Tarse (Saint Paul) et non par Jésus, et, vers la fin du 1er siècle, ne concernent plus les chrétiens. Il en va de même pour les sacrifices d'animaux et un certain nombre de règles figurant dans le Pentateuque. Seules les principales obligations morales ont été reprises dans le Nouveau Testament.
