Hole (« trou » en français) est un groupe de rock américain fondé en 1989 par Courtney Love et Eric Erlandson à Los Angeles.

Explication du Nom

A l'origine, Courtney Love voulait appeler son groupe Sweet Baby Crystal Powered By God. Elle pensa après à Hole ("trou") qui a plusieurs significations :

en rapport avec une conversation qu'elle avait eu avec sa mère Linda, qui lui avait dit qu'elle ne pouvait continuer à porter un trou en elle, suite à son enfance difficile.

une référence à la tragédie d'Euripide, Médée, dans laquelle le personnage principal parle d'un trou percé dans son âme.

L'idée première pour Hole n'a jamais été la connotation sexuelle du terme, mais cette coïncidence ne dérangea pas Courtney Love pour autant.

Présentation

Leur premier album Pretty On The Inside sort en 1991, mais ce qui va rendre Hole et Courtney Love célèbres, c'est le mariage de cette dernière avec Kurt Cobain, leader de Nirvana.

En 1994, quelques jours après le décès de Cobain, Hole sort Live Through This. Deux mois plus tard, le 15 juin 1994, la bassiste Kristen Pfaff décède d'une overdose. Le meilleur ami de Courtney à l'époque, Billy Corgan, suggère de la remplacer par la bassiste de Tinker, Melissa Auf der Maur, qui a déjà joué en première partie de Smashing Pumpkins à Montréal. Melissa fait alors la tournée de 1994 à la place de Kristen. My Body, The Hand Grenade, une compilation de raretés et de lives sort en 1997. Finalement, le groupe sort Celebrity Skin en 1998.

Melissa Auf der Maur quitte le groupe en 2000 pour rejoindre les Smashing Pumpkins. En mai 2002 Courtney Love et Eric Erlandson annoncent officiellement la fin de Hole.

Courtney Love annonce en juin 2009 la reformation de Hole et la sortie de l'album Nobody's Daughter en collaboration avec Billy Corgan. L'album sort le 27 avril 2010[1].
