Hemidactylus frenatus, parfois appelé margouillat est une espèce de gecko originaire au départ du sud-est de l'Asie, mais c'est un grand voyageur, qui s'est installé dans de nombreux endroits.

Son habitat naturel est la forêt tropicale mais il s'est adapté aux habitations humaines.

Cette espèce peut vivre près de dix ans.

Répartition géographique

Originaire du sud-est de l'Asie, on rencontre maintenant cette espèce dans de nombreux lieux comme l'Afrique, l'Amérique, et en Océanie et alentours (Indonésie, Australie, Madagascar, Ile de la Réunion…). On le rencontre également dans le sud de la France.

Paramètres climatiques

Ce gecko vit dans des zones relativements humides, 70% à 90% d'hygrométrie.

Les températures sont moyennements chaudes ( environ 26°c)

Élevage en captivité

Ce gecko se maintient relativement facilement en captivité, dans un terrarium de type arboricole (40x40x40), riche en branche et idéalement planter des plantes tropicale à grosses feuilles. L'air doit être relativement humide, (environ 80% d'hygrométrie) sans pour autant obtenir un décors et un substrat saturé d'eau. La température doit environner les 26°c, en prenant soin de créer des zones plus chaude et plus froide. L'installation d'une source de chaleur tel qu'un tapis chauffant, sur l'arrière du terra, suffit généralement à créer ce dégradé de températures. L'éclairage est idéalement composé d'une source d'UVB tel qu'un néon 5.0 spécial reptile.

Alimentation

C'est un insectivore qui consomme la plupart des insectes de taille adaptée. Lorsqu'il fréquente les habitations, c'est un prédateur des moustiques et même des cafards.

Dimorphisme sexuel

Les mâles matures présentent un renflement à la base de la queue, logement des hémipénis.

Cette espèce a été représentée sur un timbre du Kiribati en 1986 ( 40 c.).
