Gary McFarland est un vibraphoniste et arrangeur américain (Los Angeles 23 octobre1933- New York 2 novembre 1971).

Biographies

En 1963, il participe à des sessions d'enregistrement avec Cal Tjader chez Verve Records 1963 : Gary McFarland, Cal Tjader (vib) session du 6 décembre 1963 qui ne seront pas édités.

McFarland considérait qu'il existait une passerelle commune entre l'écriture, la musique de film et la scène. Malheureusement, il ne pourra mener à bien son projet, le 3 novembre 1971, il a été empoisonné avec une boisson contenant de la methadone dans un bar de New York City.

L'aventure Skye Records

Skye Records a été formé fin 1968 par le Vibraphoniste Cal Tjader, le guitariste Gábor Szabó et le compositeur Gary McFarland. Elle durera 3 années et s'arrêtera en 1970, faute de rentabilité et de moyens financiers.

Des 3 fondateurs, Gary McFarland est le seul qui exprimera son souhait de rester chez le repreneur de Skye Records : Buddah Records. Malheureusement, un destin tragique aura raison de cette volonté. Il n'enregistrera qu'un seul album Butterscotch Rum avec ce label.
