Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn est une pianiste et compositrice allemande, née à Hambourg le 14 novembre 1805 et morte à Berlin le 14 mai 1847. Elle est la sœur du compositeur Félix Mendelssohn.

Biographie

Élevée dans l'atmosphère cultivée de l'intelligentsia berlinoise, elle reçoit une excellente éducation de sa mère, puis étudie le piano et la composition. Très tôt, comme son frère, elle manifeste des dons musicaux. Son père et ensuite son frère l'empêcheront néanmoins de se consacrer totalement à sa première passion, la musique. Ainsi Abraham Mendelssohn écrivit à sa fille le 16 juillet 1820 : « La musique sera peut-être pour lui (Felix) une profession mais pour toi elle ne peut et ne doit être qu'un agrément. »

Elle épouse en 1829 le peintre Hensel, dont elle aura un fils, Sebastian. À partir de 1843, elle supervise les concerts du dimanche matin à l'Elternhaus de Berlin. Elle meurt d'une crise d'apoplexie à l'âge de 42 ans.

Elle fait partie des rares femmes compositrices de renom au XIXe siècle, avec Clara Schumann et Louise Farrenc. Il est à noter que, d'après la pianiste Françoise Tillard, six des Lieder de jeunesse de son frère Felix (dont Sehnsucht - Nostalgie - et Italien) sont d'elle (Felix le reconnaissait lui-même)1.
