L'Elephant and Castle, est un carrefour important au sud de Londres qui donna le nom au quartier environnant.

Il est souvent dit que l'origine de l'appellation proviendrait du mariage du roi Édouard Ier d'Angleterre avec Éléonor de Castille en 1254, car les Londoniens auraient eu quelques difficultés à prononcer le terme « infante de Castille » pour désigner leur reine, d'où la déformation qui en aurait suivi en « Elephant and Castle ».

Cependant, il est historiquement attesté que le nom de ce quartier provient d'un pub portant ce même nom, qui au XVIIe siècle, se situait au rond-point actuel, lequel occupait l'emplacement d'une précédente coutellerie dont le poinçon était un éléphant portant un château.
