Dave Scott a remporté l'Ironman Triathlon d'Hawaii à 6 reprises en 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, et 1987. Seul son rival, Mark Allen, remporta également 6 fois l'épreuve. Scott est connu sous le surnom de « The man. »
Dave Scott revint en 1994 à l'age de 40 ans en finissant second à l'Ironman, proche du vainqueur. En 1996 à l'age de 42 ans, il revint de nouveau en finissant 5e. Il courait le marathon en 2 h 45'.
