Les comic strips sont des bandes dessinées de quelques cases qui constituent soit de courts gags soit des histoires à suivre, publiées dans la presse quotidienne ou hebdomadaire. Aux États-Unis, le comic strip est une véritable industrie avec ses réseaux de distribution tels que le King Features Syndicate (Pim, Pam, Poum, Mandrake le magicien…) ou United Media (Peanuts, Dilbert…). Un équivalent japonais au comic strip est le yonkoma.

La plupart des comic strips les plus célèbres est centrée sur l'humour. Ils ont pour vocation de faire rire le lecteur en un minimum de cases (en général trois, mais certains strips en utilisent plus).

Les comic strips quotidiens sont aussi appelés daily strips, ceux publiés dans les hebdomadaires weekly strips.

En France, Comic Strip est le nom de l'édition consacrée à la bande dessinée sur Mediapart depuis le 16 mars 2008, créée par Dominique Bry. Depuis décembre 2008, un nouveau mensuel gratuit de Bandes Dessinées porte le nom de Comic Strip Magazine.

On rencontre de plus en plus fréquemment sur la toile les WebComics qui sont donc des comic strips mis gratuitement et régulièrement en ligne (généralement quotidiennement). Au niveau de la France, ce procédé est rare mais le site des éditions Lapin publie et traduit des strips chaque jour librement.
