Christina Rossetti

Christina Georgina Rossetti (Londres, 5 décembre 1830 - idem 29 décembre 1894) fut une poétesse anglaise, sœur de Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Michael Rossetti et de Maria Francesca Rossetti.

Son père, Gabriele Rossetti était un poète italien, et sa mère, Frances Polidori, était la sœur d'un ami de Lord Byron, John Polidori. Son grand-père, Gaetano Polidori, propriétaire d'une private press, publiera ses premiers poèmes.

Christina naquit à Londres et fut éduquée par sa mère à la maison. Par la suite, elle n'épousera pas James Collinson, non plus que Charles Cayley, cela pour des motifs religieux[1].

Son recueil qui eut le plus de succès fut Le Marché gobelin (1862).

Elle était connue pour ses positions engagées et avant-gardistes: pacifiste, opposée à la cruauté envers les animaux, pour le suffrage des femmes..

Elle est morte d'un cancer en 1894. Elle est considérée maintenant comme une grande poétesse de l'époque victorienne.
