Cheep-cheep représente la majorité des poissons dans l'univers fictif de Mario. L'espèce apparaît pour la première fois dans le jeu Super Mario Bros. en tant qu'ennemi. Ces poissons sont généralement dans l'eau, sortant de la surface pour attaquer, mais peuvent en quelques occasion rester à la surface et même être gentil, comme dans Paper Mario sur Nintendo 64. Il apparait également dans d'autres jeu lors de séquence sous l'eau.
