Charnockite

Une charnockite est une roche magmatique à faciès de granite ou de granite gneissique, blanchâtre à verdâtre, à structure granoblastique, avec quartz, microcline ou orthose très finement perthitique, plagioclase (oligoclase), hypersthène, grenat riche en pyrope, et rutile fréquent.

Pour certains, roche magmatique (granite à hypersthène), pour d'autres roche métamorphique catazonale dont la paragenèse se rapproche de la granulite (Avec absence toutefois du quartz en plaquettes).

Roche très présente dans les socles précambriens, souvent sous des granites.

Historique

Son nom est dédié à Charnock, fondateur de Calcutta, dont la pierre tombale fut taillée dans cette roche
