Æthelwalh (ou mieux Æðelwealh) a été historiquement le premier roi du Sussex.
En 661, le roi Wulfhere de Mercie lui donna les territoires du Meonwara et l'île de Wight. Il fut son parrain lors de sa conversion au christianisme. Ainsi, Æthelwalh devint le premier roi chrétien du Sussex. Il se maria avec Eafe, fille de Eanfrith de Hwicce. En 681, Æthelwalh donne les terres de Selsey à Wilfrid, évêque exilé de York, qui y fonda l'abbaye de Selsey.
En 685, Cædwalla, un prince du Wessex, envahit le Sussex et le ravagea. Æthelwalh fut tué. Cædwalla fut battu et repoussé par les lieutenants de Æthelwalh, Berthun et Andhun, lesquels gouvernèrent le Sussex après ces événements.
