Carleton E. Watkins (11 novembre 1829-23 juin 1916) était un photographe américain. Il est né à Oneonta, dans l'État de New York. Il partit pour San Francisco en 1851. Il voyagea à travers la Californie en compagnie de Collis Huntington, qui devint par la suite l'un des propriétaires du Central Pacific Railroad, et qui aida Watkins dans sa carrière. Il commença à s'intéresser à la photographie alors qu'il travaillait dans un studio de San Francisco. Il prit ses premiers clichés dès 1861 et se spécialisa dans les paysages californiens et la vie des mineurs. Il photographia la vallée de Yosemite dans la Sierra Nevada.
