Beta Andromedae (Beta And, β And) est une étoile de la constellation d'Andromède. Son nom traditionnel est Mirach, également orthographié Merach, Mirak, Mirac, Mirakh et al Mizar (à ne pas confondre avec le nom traditionnel de Mizar de l'étoile Zeta Ursae Majoris)[1].

Caractéristiques physiques

Mirach est une géante rouge, de magnitude apparente moyenne de +2,07, rayonnant principalement dans l'infrarouge, à peu près de la taille de l'orbite de Mercure dans le système solaire.

Comme toutes les étoiles géantes, Mirach est légèrement variable, de façon irrégulière et sur une faible échelle de magnitude (de +2,01 à +2,10).

Mirach est environ 6 fois plus massive que le Soleil et possède un noyau d'hélium ou de carbone et finira son existence comme une naine blanche.

Environnement stellaire

Mirach est une étoile double. Son compagnon, 60 000 fois moins lumineux, est une étoile très peu massive, distante de 1 700 UA, 40 fois la distance entre le Soleil et Pluton.

Nom traditionnel

Cette étoile s'appelle en Arabe 'المراق al-Maraqq' un terme signifiant longes . Diverses erreurs de transcription ont formé son nom actuel.
