Il est notamment connu pour avoir interprété le shérif Teasle dans Rambo, où il pourchasse John Rambo (incarné par Sylvester Stallone) dans la petite ville de Hope. Un personnage se présentant comme Brian Dennehy fait une apparition dans South Park: Le Film. Celui-ci entre pendant une chanson parlant de Brian Boitano, pensant qu'on avait prononcé son nom.
