Après la mort du Roi Stefan Milutin, ses deux fils Stefan Uroš III Dečanski et Konstantin (nés de mères différentes) s'engagent dans une lutte fratricide pour récupérer le pouvoir, Mladen s'alliant à Stefan Dečanski. Après la victoire de ce dernier, en 1322, Mladen fut désigné Duc de Trebinje (actuelle Bosnie) et Dračevice (actuelle Croatie), deux domaines du Royaume serbe, en remerciement de son engagement lors de la bataille.

Quatre années plus tard, en 1326, le Duc Mladen meurt : c'est son fils Branko Mladenovic qui fondera la dynastie qui porte aujourd'hui son nom.
