Vital du Four[1] (Bazas, 1260-Avignon, 1327), cardinal au titre des saints Sylvestre et Martin au Mont, était un théologien franciscain et un philosophe scolastique.

Biographie

Vital du Four

Vital du Four étudia d'abord la médecine à Montpellier en 1295, puis fut prieur d'Éauze et de Saint-Mont. Il rédigea, au cours de cette période, un ouvrage de médecine sur l'eau-de-vie d'Armagnac[2].

Il en énuméra les quarante « vertus et efficacités » lorsqu'elle était prise « médicalement et sobrement ». Il avait noté que cette aygue ardente conservait les viandes, extrayait les vertus des plantes, guérissait les maux et les blessures, aiguisait l'esprit, rendait l'homme joyeux, conservait la jeunesse et retardait la sénilité[2].

Il est devenu cardinal en 1312 et évêque d'Albano en 1321[3].

Dans la polémique sur la pauvreté évangélique, il était pour une pauvreté modérée du Christ et des apôtres : ceux-ci possédaient en commun sans posséder en propre[4].
