The Soiling of Old Glory

The Soiling of Old Glory (de l'américain, littéralement « la souillure de la gloire passée ») est une photographie prise par le photojournaliste Stanley J. Forman, et publiée le 6 avril 1976 à la Une du Boston Herald-American (et dans plusieurs autres journaux à travers les États-Unis).

Elle a été prise la veille de sa publication, sur la place de l'hôtel de ville de Boston, au cours d'une manifestation rassemblant des Blancs qui protestaient contre le busing, une pratique dont la United States District Court du Massachusetts avait décidé la mise en place deux ans auparavant afin de mettre un terme à la ségrégation raciale dont les Afro-Américains étaient victimes dans les écoles publiques de la ville.

La photographie représente Theodore C. Landsmark, un avocat et militant des droits civiques, noir, en train d'être agressé par deux des manifestants : Jim Kelly qui se tient derrière lui et semble lui tenir les bras pour l'immobiliser, pendant que Joseph Rakes pointe la hampe d'un drapeau américain sur lui. (Landsmark indique cependant que Rakes tentait simplement de le frapper avec, non de s'en servir comme d'une lance, ainsi que la photo le suggère[1].)

Elle a notamment contribué à briser l'idée selon laquelle le racisme n'existerait que dans le Sud des États-Unis[2].

L'année suivante, en 1977, elle a remporté le prix Pulitzer de la photographie de faits divers (spot news photography)[3].
