Smallworld Systems Ltd est une société d'édition de système d'information géographique (SIG) créé à Cambridge, Royaume-Uni, en 1988 par Dick Newell, Tim Cadman, Richard Green, David Theriault, Mike Williamson, Hugh Fingland, Arthur Chance, Mark Easterfield, Cees Van Der Leeden, et Klas Lindgren. L'entreprise a grandi pour devenir, au cours des années 1990, un leader du marché des SIG parmi les entreprises de services publics (eau, gaz, électricité, télécommunications, etc.). En septembre 2000, l'entreprise fut rachetée par GE Energy, une division de General Electric. Le nom Smallworld a survécu à l'entreprise en tant que nom commercial pour le SIG et ses applications.

La technologie Smallworld permet le développement de tout type d'application de système d'information géographique. Son moteur topologique est particulièrement adapté à la gestion de réseaux, et donc à toute application visant les réseaux d'énergie, d'eau, d'assainissement, routiers, ou de télécommunications.

La technologie Smallworld repose essentiellement sur

  1. Un langage orienté objet, appelé Magik, qui supporte l'héritage multiple, le polymorphisme, et permet un typage dynamique.
  2. Un SGBD appelé VMDS, pour Version Managed Data Store (magasin de données géré par versions), qui a été conçu et optimisé pour stocker et analyser des données spatiales et topologiques complexes.
