Rachel Crothers est une dramaturge et metteur en scène américaine, née à Bloomington (Illinois) le 12 décembre 1878, décédée à Danbury (Connecticut) le 5 juillet 1958.

Biographie

Après des études d'art dramatique à Boston et New York, Rachel Crothers débute au théâtre sur la scène new-yorkaise, comme auteur de pièces, jouées régulièrement à Broadway entre 1906 et 1943. L'une des plus connues est Susan and God, créée en 1937, puis adaptée au cinéma en 1940. Plusieurs autres de ses pièces seront également transposées à l'écran, de 1914 à 1941 ; et notons ici qu'elle contribue, comme scénariste — la seule fois —, à l'adaptation en 1935 de sa pièce Splendor. Elle exerce aussi comme metteur en scène à Broadway, principalement de ses propres œuvres, mais également de quelques-unes écrites par des collègues dramaturges. Toujours à Broadway, elle est actrice d'une pièce en 1920 et productrice d'une autre en 1925 (dans chaque cas, il s'agit d'une expérience unique).
