Jacob Bright

Jacob Bright (né le 26 mai 1821 à Rochdale et décédé le 7 novembre 1899 à Goring-on-Thames) était un homme politique libéral anglais, élu au parlement britannique pour Manchester. Son frère John était lui aussi élu libéral.

Quatrième des onze enfants du quaker Jacob Bright et de son épouse Martha Wood, il travailla très tôt pour la filature familiale.

Il s'engagea en politique, d'abord dans le radicalisme, puis en soutenant le chartisme. Il devint le premier maire de Rochdale quand l'agglomération industrielle obtint son statut municipal. Il se présenta au parlement britannique à partir de 1867. Il fut député de 1867 à 1874 puis de 1876 à 188 et enfin de 1886 à 1895. Cette année-là, il devint membre du Privy Council. Il milita activement pour le droit de vote des femmes.

Après le Bloody Sunday du 13 novembre 1887, il participa à la Law and Liberty League fondée par Annie Besant et William Thomas Stead.

En 1855, il épousa Ursula Mellor avec qui il eut trois enfants.
