Un oriel est une avancée en encorbellement aménagée sur un ou plusieurs niveaux d'une façade.

Il peut épouser différents aspects et formes (à deux, trois ou quatre faces) et être surmonté d'un toit ou d'une petite terrasse avec garde-corps.

Héritier lointain des anciennes échauguettes françaises, l'oriel peut également être désigné par l'anglicisme bow-window, terme qui désigne aujourd'hui pour les professionnels les châssis vitrés coulissants constitués d'ouvrants en portions de cylindres à vitres pouvant être planes ou cylindriques.

L'avantage de ce type de construction, en dehors de l'originalité artistique de la façade du bâtiment, est de pouvoir jouir d'un peu plus de clarté et de chaleur solaire, en plus d'une meilleure vue sur la rue (sa fonction militaire initiale).
