Foggy Dew (ou The Foggy Dew) est le nom de plusieurs ballades, qui font partie des grands standards de la chanson et de la culture irlandaise.
La première chanson qui portait ce titre était d'origine anglaise, parfois appelée Foggy, Foggy Dew (la rosée brumeuse). La ballade parle d'un amoureux. Elle a été publiée autour de 1815. Il en existe de nombreuses versions : Cecil Sharp[1] en a rassemblé à lui seul huit versions. Burl Ives, qui a popularisé la chanson aux États-Unis dans les années 1940, a prétendu qu'une version datait de l'Amérique coloniale. Ives a été emprisonné a Mona dans l'Utah, pour l'avoir chantée en public.

Une autre chanson appelée Foggy Dew a été écrite en 1919 par le chanoine Charles O'Neill, de la paroisse de Kilcoo et plus tard du comté de Newcastle dans le Comté de Down[2]. La musique provient d'un air traditionnel arrangé par Carl Hardebeck[3].
Cette chanson fait la chronique de l'Insurrection de Pâques 1916, et encourage les Irlandais à lutter pour la cause de l'Irlande, plutôt que pour celle des Anglais, comme tant de jeunes hommes le faisaient durant la Première Guerre mondiale.
As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I
There armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by
No pipe did hum nor battle drum did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swell rang out through the foggy dew

La chanson (aussi parfois connu sous le nom de Down the Glen, "En bas de la vallée") a été interprétée et enregistrée par la plupart des groupes de musique irlandais, y compris The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Shane MacGowan, et les Wolfe Tones. Sinéad O'Connor l'a chantée dans une version très mélancolique sur l'album collectif des Chieftains, The Long Black Veil (1995).
Une autre version célèbre de Foggy Dew a été enregistrée dans le best-seller d'Alan Stivell, l'album Live à l'Olympia (1972), et reprise en 1993 dans l'album Again (avec les chœurs de Shane MacGowan).
Gilles Servat interprète une autre version dans 2 albums, L'albatros fou (1992) avec le groupe de musique celtique Triskell et Sur les quais de Dublin (1996) en duo avec Ronnie Drew.
La chanson Livin' in America par le groupe de rock celtique les Black 47 est jouée et chantée sur l'air de Foggy Dew.
Nicole Rieu en a arrangé l'air et le chante sur un texte signé Simon Monceau ("je n'suis qu'une goutte, une goutte d'eau...").
