Daptone Records

Dapton Records est un label indépendant de soul et de funk, créé par Gabriel Roth et Neal Sugarman, et établi à Brooklyn, New York. Après la disparition du label Desco, Gabriel Roth s'est associé à Neal Sugarman pour créer ce nouveau label. Le studio a enregistré Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, et également enregistré et lancé The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, The Poets of Rhythm, The Daktaris, The Mighty Imperials, Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, Binky Griptite, et Naomi Davis.

Dap-Kings est le groupe "résident" du label (voir Musicien de studio ou house band ou session musicians, c'est-à-dire les musiciens qui accompagnent les groupes du label lors des enregistrements et parfois des concerts. Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings et formé de Sharon Jones (chant), Gabriel Roth aka Bosco Mann (basse électrique), Binky Griptite (guitare), Tommy 'TNT' Brenneck (guitare), Fernando 'Bugaloo' Velez (percussions), Homer Steinweiss (batterie), David Guy (trompette), Neil Sugarman (sax. ténor) et Ian Hendrixson-Smith (sax. baryton).

The Sugarman 3 est formé de Neal Sugarman (saxophone); Adam Scone (orgue Hammond); Al Street (guitare); Rudy Albin (batterie); Dave Guy (trompette). Soul singer Lee Fields chante souvent avec Sugarman de même que la flûtiste Daisy Sugarman.

Daptone a ses propres studios à Brooklyn, où ont été enregistrés la majorité des albums. La spécificité de leur son tient à l'acoustique des lieux, l'enregistrement sur bandes analogiques (pas de numérique), et le mixage de Gabriel Roth.

Le producteur Mark Ronson a notamment travaillé avec le studio d'enregistrement et ses ingénieurs du son. Actuellement, Daptone a lancé 34 singles (7") et une douzaine d'albums (LPs) également sous forme de CD. The Dap-Kings ont collaboré à l'album de Amy Winehouse Back to Black.

A noter que le groupe s'est fait cambrioler en février 2009, une bonne partie des équipements ayant été dérobée à cette occasion.
