Baroness est un groupe de sludge metal américain originaire de Savannah dans l'État de Géorgie dont les membres ont grandi ensemble à Lexington (Virginie)[1].

Biographie

Le groupe a été fondé en 2003[1] par les membres du groupe de punk/metal Johnny Welfare and the Paychecks[2]. Pour le moment Baroness n'a pas dévoilé l'origine de leur nom[3].

Le chanteur John Baizley a développé l'artwork des albums de Baroness mais aussi celui d'autres groupes et labels comme Darkest Hour, The Red Chord, Kylesa, Genghis Tron, Daughters, Torche et Pig Destroyer[4].

Leur premier album, intitulé Red Album, fut élu Album de l'année par le magazine américain de heavy metal Revolver[5]. Le 1er décembre 2007 Baroness donna un concert à New York entièrement filmé pouvant être vu sur leur page WoozyFly[6]. Le groupe a pu jouer en France à l'occasion du hellfest 2008 (sur la discover stage).
