Le Whitney Museum of American Art est une galerie d'art et un musée de New York, fondé en 1931 par Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.

Historique

Le Whitney Museum est particulièrement réputé pour ses collections d'art contemporain, souvent encore plus à jour que celles du Museum of Modern Art. Sa traditionnelle exposition biennale permet de faire connaître au plus grand nombre des artistes américains émergents.

Le peintre Edward Hopper a légué une grande partie de ses œuvres au Whitney Museum.

En plus de ses collections habituelles, le musée héberge un portail internet, Net Art.

L'un des bâtiments a été construit par Marcel Breuer, en 1966 en béton : couvert de parements en granit, il offre une structure en porte-à-faux et semble fermé à toute influence extérieure. L'architecte a voulu créer des volumes simples et sans ornementation, conformément au style international.
