Roosevelt Island est une île étroite, située dans l'East River à New York, entre l'île du Manhattan et le quartier de Queens. Longue d'environ 3 kilomètres, sa largeur maximale est seulement de 240 mètres, et sa superficie est 0,6 km².
Appelée Minnahanock par les Indiens avant la colonisation, elle porta le nom de Manning's Island de 1666 à 1686, Blackwell Island de 1686 à 1921, Welfare Island de 1921 jusqu'en 1973 où elle fut rebaptisée en l'honneur du président Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
L'île fut longtemps occupée par des hôpitaux ou des asiles. Il y avait également un pénitencier qui fut fermé en 1935.
Récemment, le logement s'y est développé avec l'apparition d'immeubles résidentiels ; il y a environ 10000 habitants sur l'île. Des hôpitaux existent encore au nord (Coler Hospital) et au sud (Goldwater Hospital) de l'île.
Roosevelt Island est reliée à Manhattan par le métro et par un téléphérique (le Roosevelt Island Tramway mis en service en 1976), et au quartier de Queens par un pont et par le métro.
