24° 37′ 39″ S 70° 24′ 15″ W / -24.6276, -70.4043 Le télescope VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) de 4,2 m acquis par l'ESO dans le cadre de l'entrée du Royaume-Uni est développé par l'Astronomy Technology Centre (ATC), le Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) et l'université de Durham. Le télescope est installé à l'observatoire du Cerro Paranal, à proximité du Very Large Telescope (VLT).
Le projet, financé par la JIF et PPARC, est entré en fonctionnement en 2007. Il s'agit d'un instrument de grand relevé photométrique infra-rouge (0,85-2,4 μm) couvrant un champ de 0,6 degré carré avec des pixels de 0,34 arcseconde. La possibilité d'un complément visible « DarkCam » devrait être examinée prochainement par le STC. Ce télescope sera utilisé au 3/4 en mode survey.
